When Someone Says “God told me to…”

… you might want to recall this story from the lives of the Desert Fathers (via):

“[O]ne of the Fathers was in prayer when the devil sought to trick him. A demon appeared in the cell of the monk (who was in prayer) and said, “I am the angel Gabriel sent from God.” Without looking up the monk replied, “You must be in the wrong cell. I am not worthy for an angel to visit me.” The demon disappeared, defeated by the humility of the monk.”

This story might be instructive to some of our more vocal megachurch leaders.
