George Grant explains the Christian origins of Boxing Day. Contrast this with the stores in Florida where I’m vacationing, 3/4′s of which were open on Christmas. Unbelievable.

Wilson’s defense here is pretty weak sauce. I don’t get the sense that most people who mock or taunt someone they perceive as being gay undertake such considerations as Wilson proposes. Given the numbers of gay teens (and even teens thought to be gay) pushed to the point of suicide, even if they did, is it worth it defending this practice? Really?
To the contrary, I think that Wilson has leveled a hearty heaping of Tabasco. Wilson isn’t defending those who don’t undertake his considerations. He’s defending gay jokes only with the considerations he’s proposed.
Your suicide concern is a red herring. Of course Wilson would be against gay bullying. He addressed that in the first paragraph of his article. Later on he says that it’s perverse to mock someone for struggling with their sexuality.
Wilson is most likely referring to light hearted humour directed towards the perverse 47 year old man I saw trying to date young 20-somethings on some stupid dating show last night while channel surfing with my wife. When the host of the show expressed incredulity that he was doing this, she was called a homophobe and an ageist. I mean come on, if we can’t mock that, what can we mock?
Wilson’s little argument from Proverbs 23 is instructive. Surely alcoholism has caused human misery and yet the writers of Scripture will mock the folly of drunkenness. Scripture does seem to at least some of the time mock those who embrace sin wholeheartedly.
And to reiterate something obvious – those who bully and mock teens who struggle with their sexuality are actual dumb redneck bastards.
This reminds me a great redneck joke: What’s the number one pick up line at redneck speed dating conventions? “Hey, nice tooth.”
