Religious Group Supported Bin Laden

Except it was a Christian group(!) Juan Cole has a gem from 1987 when a conservative group called Christian Voice had a platform that included,

“not only abortion and school prayer, but also support for increased defense spending, ‘Star Wars,’ and aid to anti-communist insurgents in Nicaragua, Afghanistan, Angola and elsewhere. . .”

Now it’s obvious that there’s just no way that you can predict the outcome of every possible policy decision. What this does highlight is the problem of Christian groups attempting to come up with *the* definitive Christian political platform. It’s just impossible to work out what the most “Christian” position is on a great many topics. More often than not it seems as though there are policy choices that cannot and should not be wrapped up in religion.

So sad. I heard about something similar when a Christian group supported bringing children from Africa to Texas, only to find out that the middleman organization was using the children for borderline child slavery. I don’t want to be apolitical, but I do think Christian service should be self-motivated and not reliant on governmental or secular groups. Of course, there’s the problem that these groups are often the ones with the money! I’m not sure what to do about this.
I agree there’s no definitive Christian platform, although I’m tied up in knots about who to vote for when the time comes, because I often think each party has an equal grasp of Christian values, albeit focused on different Christian virtues.
