Inherent Difficulties with The New Urbanism

2008 January 30

Andrew, I quite like the idea of creating a more livable environment in, say, Mississauga. At a friend’s place in Oakville I remarked how much the street layout resembled Christie Pits (alleyways and rear garages, streets reclaimed for stoops, porches et cetera) Insofar as these changes can succeed, I’d support them. There are inherent challenges though to making these places walkable (probably the most important factor in urban community-building). I can go on about this, but Spacing magazine’s blog has an illustration that makes the nature of the challenge fairly clear.
